Clybiau Plant Cymru Kids’ Clubs, a registered charity and company limited by
guarantee, helps communities across Wales by promoting, developing and
supporting quality, affordable, accessible out of school childcare clubs. Since
its launch in October 2001, the organisation has helped to increase the number
of childcare clubs in Wales to around 1200. These clubs provide more than 28,000
childcare places and employ more than 2,500 people in local communities. The
organisation works with the Welsh Assembly Government, the Big Lottery and other
funding bodies, together with Local Authorities and communities across
Wales.
With its main office in Cardiff, covering SE Wales, Clybiau Plant Cymru Kids'
Clubs also has regional offices in Swansea covering West Wales, and Colwyn Bay
covering North Wales and Powys. The organisation is lead by Director Wendy
Hawkins with a staff of around 50 made up of half-time Development Officers
covering each local authority, part-time support workers, funding team, training
team and administrative support including IT. The childcare sector is worth
around £1m per week in Wales but there is still a shortfall in childcare places;
there is a need to develop strong entrepreneurship culture in childcare.
The purpose of Clybiau Plant Cymru Kids' Clubs’ work in
CWLWM is to support individual and third sector start-ups.
Increased availability will increase accessibility, enable more people to become
economically active and attract more start-ups in the sector. Clybiau Plant
Cymru Kids' Clubs is therefore seeking to produce through CWLWM
a toolkit to develop its work in supporting the setting up
of new childcare settings as well as supporting those existing childcare
settings experiencing issues relating to management and sustainability.
It has long been recognised that within the childcare sector there is a lack
of understanding that the provision of ‘paid for’ childcare is a business
activity, dealing with such issues as employment and financial management.
The toolkit, will be promoted as a ‘Business Toolkit’ for the childcare
sector as a whole. An additional aspect of the project will be to target
business advisors to ensure they have an understanding of the specific needs of
the sector in relation to Business Start–up. The project will therefore include
an element of marketing and training regarding the end product.
Clybiau Plant Cymru Kids' Clubs’ CWLWM work will result in:
- A Business Toolkit for the childcare sector.
- A programme of awareness sessions for Business Advisors.
- A report on the findings of the piloting with statistics of groups taking
part and information they provide (re what support they need, difficulties
they have faced, etc).
